NOTES

[*] Atman : sometimes we consider the body to be the “I”, and sometimes the mind, intellect, or the Consciousness beyond the body and the mind; and so the word Atman has a variety of meanings. Here the word Atman, in the phrase yata-chitta-atma (with mind and body controlled) refers to the body, while the word atmanam refers to the mind. And when we say that we must unite the mind with the Atman, we are using the word in the sense of the Consciousness beyond the body and mind.

[†] One must have a very clear conception regarding the real nature of the Self. One must completely merge the mind in that conception. We have become extremely weak by thinking of ourselves as the body and mind. If we can weaken that idea even a little, there is the possibility of great benefit coming to us.

[‡] Buddhi-grahya (perceived by the intellect): This means that it is directly experienced; it is not known through the senses, but at the same time, it is not simply imagined. This experience is felt to be real with an intensity hundred times more than that of the experience of external objects.

[§] Na cha eva ayam sthitah chalati tatvatah (established in which, he never departs from his real state): while experiencing a particular object through the senses, the mind may move away from that and experience a different object. But when one is in the state of samadhi , the mind becomes so steady in the object of meditation that it is not possible for it to experience any other object.

[¶] Anirvinna-chetasa (with an undepressed mind): Dejection is the state of inaction which comes when our hopes are dashed. It is said that we must maintain great enthusiasm and hope in our hearts because it takes a long time to attain the state of samadhi .

[**] The Yogi who has attained the state of samadhi feels that he has become distinct from the body and mind, that he is pure Consciousness and the Witness of all that takes place in the bodies and minds of all jivas . Just as there is nothing within a wave other than water, and waves exist in water, so does he see that the experience of “I”, “I” is found in all beings and that all beings exist in one great “I”.
